SRP-Groeifinanciering: Existential Ethics of Artificial Intelligence: Toward an Interdisciplinary Platform of Expertise (SRP66)

This proposal aims to build a center of excellence around the theme of ethics of artificial intelligence (AI), rooted in an interdisciplinary collaboration platform that consists of representatives of both the Centre for Ethics and Humanism (ETHU) and the VUB AI Lab. The project envisions two major innovations. On the one hand, within ethics of AI, the construction of a new framework is proposed, that corrects the current lack of attention in the field to matters of everyday experience and responsibility-taking – by importing insights from existential ethics and philosophy of technology. On the other hand, a collaboration structure will be set up in which systematic exchange is enabled between ethical-philosophical insights and AI/computer science, in order to mitigate the general lack of sustained interaction between these two – through installing a system of external experts, meetings, conferences and research stays. This collaboration structure will substantially enhance scientific results, but what is more, it will also contribute to the central policy of outreach that the project wants to propagate, namely, aiming to become an expertise center that delivers best practices and policy guidelines on the topic of AI to a wide range of societal stakeholders.
