Verbal misunderstandings happen frequently in human communication. But they get as frequently repaired, especially when competent communicators self-monitor what they are producing and pay attention to the effect of their communicative acts on listeners. Repairs often go beyond simple corrections or clarifications. They extend, adjust, or align common ground, including linguistic knowledge, and are therefore a primary mechanism to make understanding possible. The goal of this project is to answer two questions: (i) What kind of cognitive architecture is needed to support communicative repairs, and (ii) What form do repair strategies take?
