The Translation and Reception of Heinrich Böll in the Dutch Language Area, 1950-1970.
The present research proposal concerns the reception of the Dutch translations of German author Heinrich Böll (1917-1985) during the first two postwar decades (1950-1970). It includes analyses of individual translations as well as an appraisal of the role of translators, publishers and reviewers in the selection and distribution of Böll's work. In the second place, it situates these translations within the ideological and sociopolitical context(s) of the 1950s and 1960s. Finally, it compares the reception of the Dutch target texts in Belgium and the Netherlands with the reception of the German source texts in (West) Germany.
