Daily life interventions for social withdrawal behaviour in adolescents

Social withdrawal behaviour is an important risk factor for many psychological, social, and somatic problems throughout the lifespan. Adolescence is an especially vulnerable and critical period for social development; therefore developing an effective intervention for withdrawal in this particular phase of life is essential. However, not much is known about the daily dynamics of social withdrawal, particularly in adolescents. Targeting daily-life dynamics in real-time may provide a much more efficient and effective treatment for social withdrawal, aiding adolescents to develop social skills while providing them with the necessary support throughout their real-life social interactions.

The present project therefore aims to:
1) Assess the daily life dynamics of social withdrawal behaviour in adolescents, as they occur in real life.
2) Use the results of this study to design a real-life intervention that extends beyond the doctor’s office. This intervention, in the form of an application (app), will help adolescents decrease their levels of social withdrawal, through personalized, daily support. Such an intervention has the benefit of lowering the threshold to seeking help, improving the development of social skills, and providing support in real-life social situations when help is needed.
