EUPHORIC: Electro-optic Ultrafast PHotonic integrated OptICal modulators (EUPHORIC)

By integrating more optical functionality on a single chip, performance, energy efficiency and compactness are constantly being improved. Such a Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) collects various integrated optical components and electronic functions that could previously be implemented with discrete components. One of the basic building blocks is the phase modulator. High bandwidth phase modulators can be connected to a chip: intensity and phase modulation for advanced modulation diagrams for sending telecom signals, frequency shifters, laser frequency stabilizers for sensor applications, etc. A technology that can be integrated into pure phase modulators on PICs to functionalize on a chip.

In this project we want to demonstrate that the reed developed technology is robust and compatible with existing process technology to make photonic integrated circuits. Furthermore, we want to show a state-of-the-art optical modulator with a high bandwidth in the form of a 2x2 Mach-Zehnder switch. In addition to their effective integration, it is possible to provide their partners with their patented technology in their PIC platform.
