Optimization as a design tool for shell structures

The shape of a shell plays a key role in its structural behaviour. Finding the optimal shape and size of a shell is therefore of crucial importance. Structural optimization is well fit to reach this goal. In this paper, structural optimization is presented as a design tool for shell structures and applied to the design of a barrel vault. It is demonstrated that the choice of the design variables and the parametrization influences the resulting design strongly. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
