Augustine’s Sermones ad Populum on the Feast of Ascension. A Liturgical-Soteriological Understanding of Grace

Journal Contribution - Journal Article

The article offers a study of the sermones ad populum preached by Augustine on the liturgical Feast of Ascension. First the content of these 12/13 sermones (ss. 261-265F, 377[?]) is successively presented. Subsequently some important themes regarding the content of Augustine's preaching on the Ascension is studied: Christology, Christian ethics, and the doctrine of grace. The article shows that the issue of grace is prominently present in the Ascension sermones, however not in a polemical, anti-Pelagian way. © 2011, all rights reserved.
