Filelfo, Francesco

Book Contribution - Chapter

Filelfo was not a systematic philosopher, yet his works are an apt illustration of the ways in which Quattrocento humanists negotiated the return of the Greek legacy in the West. Filelfo himself brought numerous manuscripts of ancient Greek philosophical texts from Byzantium to Italy, and he was often among the first to incorporate those texts into his writings. Boasting a superior knowledge of the Greek language, he entertained philosophical polemics, mostly concerning doxographical and terminological issues.
