On the potential of tuned resonators to obtain low-frequency vibrational stop bands in periodic panels

Journal Contribution - Journal Article

The potential of applying stop bands to decrease the vibrational response of panels is investigated. A thorough comparison between interference based stop bands and resonance based stop bands is conducted both for the attenuation achievable within the stop band as well as for the ease of manipulation of the stop band frequencies. The analysis of the vibrational response of finite plates with addition of tuned resonators or added points masses allows to investigate the relation between the predicted stop bands for infinite plates and their finite counter parts. In all these analyses, the effect of adding damping to the tuned resonators is also assessed, which is shown to have a very favourable influence. Analysis of the sensitivity of the achieved vibration reduction with respect to the spacing between the resonators leads to a guideline for the number of resonators necessary to achieve efficient global vibration reduction. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
