Pluralistic Dynamic Encyclopedias as a New Standard of Advanced Scholarly Publishing: Using Experimental Philosophy to Study Scientific Pluralism (FWOAL864)
The project aims to specify, implement and evaluate a Pluralistic Dynamic Encyclopedia (PDE).
The PDE combines the academic quality of scholarly publishing with the pluralism needed in science and philosophy. It implements the idea of open-access publishing and offers innovative techniques for scholarly publishing that go beyond the scope of comparable encyclopedias such as the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (SEP).
The PDE addresses the problem of pluralism: How can an encyclopedia not only stay up-to-date with the latest developments in a given field but also dynamically represent the requisite variety of multi-faceted, interdisciplinary expert opinions? The PDE is geared towards social responsibility and transparency in addressing not only the advanced specialist but also laypeople. Readers are encouraged to interact constructively with authors, who agree to revise regularly their respective entries to keep them up-to-date.
Similar to SEP and Wikipedia, the encyclopedia is accessible on the internet. All communication among editors, authors, reviewers, and readers is handled by a web-based database-driven interface, which will be developed and refined over the course of the project by a postdoc who is not only a seasoned programmer but also coordinates editorial aspects and is knowledgeable about the content of the PDE.
While for test purposes, the project will focus on constructivist philosophy, the PDE will be designed generally enough to cover any topic later on.
