eHealth Consent: is de patiënt er klaar voor?

Journal Contribution - Journal Article

Vitalink helps the patient to have an insight in his own medical health record, and can lead to a better healthcare. The eHealth Consent application makes it possible for patients to give the healthcare workers of their choice access to their personal medical records on eHealth. This research focuses on the following questions: which are the facilitating factors and barriers that patients with a chronic disease experience while using the eHealth Consent procedure and to which caregivers do they give access? Participants were recruited during a period of registration in GP practices. They were observed and questioned during the use of the eHealth Consent application (semi-structured interviews). These were transcribed, coded and analysed by two independent researchers (using the method of thematic analysis). Seventeen patients were included. The identified barriers related to the patient, the procedure, the search engine or the computer. The facilitating factors related to the patient and the procedure. The healthcare workers could be classified into four groups: those indicated, forgotten or excluded by the patients, and healthcare workers who wished to include patients in vain. Patients with chronic diseases experienced major difficulties before and during the use of the eHealth application. These varied in nature. Patients were not able to provide access to all the caregivers of their choice. This research reveals many points for improvement of the eHealth Consent application.
