The Effects of Religious Diversity on Spiritual Care: Reflections from the Dutch Correction Facilities
Book Contribution - Chapter
This chapter discusses how in the Netherlands, prison chaplaincy has developed recently into a multi-faith endeavor. The government adopts a pluralist attitude with regard to prison chaplaincy implying an adaptation of the legal framework but also a strong reorganization of the Muslim community at a national level. The reshaping of the prison chaplaincy as multi-faith has also deep implications on the perception of religion as an individual preference. The government has opened up chaplaincy under clear secular expectations: that of gender equality, that of the respect of individual rights, and that of the necessity of a professionalization of spiritual care. The authors explore the legitimation of spiritual care by the state, by religious or worldview traditions and by the detainees themselves. Then, they analyze the organizational management of religious diversity.
