Project

Algorithmic Transparency & Accountability in Practice

This interdisciplinary project proposal significantly contributes to the debate on algorithmic transparency and accountability. In an unprecedented effort, it will empirically investigate compliance with the data protection right to an explanation. This empirical data will constitute the basis for pinpointing key issues, evidence-based policy guidance and conducting further interdisciplinary research. Moreover, it will inform the co-creation of a concrete prototype for making algorithms that affect our daily lives understandable to the average individual. The project enables the two participating centers to (re-)collaborate, with their cumulative expertise in law (CiTiP) and social sciences (Mintlab) enabling a more holistic perspective on a critical societal issue. The project has a high valorization potential, from media-attention and usefulness to regulators, to serving as a catalyst for future research collaborations, in and outside the KU Leuven.
