In-Situ Study on Slag Solidification by using Electrical Conductivity Measurement

To enable recycling ferrous waste slag, the mineralogy of the slag can be controlled through the cooling conditions. It is however difficult to steer the cooling as the crystallization behavior of the slag cannot be measured online. The electrical conductivity (σ=1/ρ) is the reciprocal of the resistivity and it is sensitive to small chemical and physical changes of slags. The aim of this study is to identify the relation between the electrical conductivity and the microstructure and mineralogy of the slag. For this, the slag electrical conductivity will be measured as a function of temperature and slag composition. The effect of the slag characteristics (mineral phases, solid fraction and distribution) on the electrical conductivity will be evaluated on quenched samples using SEM, XRD and CSLM. The outcome of this project will be useful to design and develop a new online method to control the slag cooling process.
