Towards a better understanding of functioning in patients with axial spondyloarthritis: an application of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) model

The concept of Spondyloarthropathy (SpA) embodies a family of rheumaticdiseases characterized by inflammation and damage in the form of destruction and/or bone formation at the synovio-entheseal complex. In axial SpA, disease processes typically occur in the vicinity of the sacroiliac joints and result in the feeling of stiffness, the loss of mobility and inflammatory back pain. Recently, the Assessment of SpondyloArthritis international Society, an expert group of rheumatologists, endorsed the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) classification to standardize the evaluation of functioning in SpA. This project aims to establish a better understanding of functioningin axial SpA. First, we will critically appraise the contemporary methodology to evaluate activities and participation using a mixed methods approach. Second, we will introduce novel objective and technology-based strategies to assess functioning. Third, we will apply the ICF as a model to evaluate determinants of functioning. Last, we will explore the role of personal factors and spinal motor control as neglected determinants of functioning in axial SpA.
