Virtual reality as a tool for lighting design

Accurate high-fidelity virtual reality could be an important practical and economical tool for lighting and architectural design, virtual prototyping, medical applications, an so on. In addition, the systematic control of highly realistic virtual stimuli could lead to ground-breaking consequences for the scientific study of the appearance and experience of light and color. However, it is as yet unclear how (well) perception in real scenes corresponds to that in a 3D virtual environment (and vice versa). The main research question for this PhD is therefore: 'Do we and can we see and experience light(ing) and color the same way in high-fidelity virtual reality as in actual reality?'.
