A Bridge too Far? Privacy by Design in the Age of Cybersecurity.

Regulation by design, i.e. the embedding of certain standards into design in order to foster social outcomes, has been gaining traction in policy circles. This is especially true in the context of privacy, where computer scientists are expected to propose designs that are aligned with regulatory objectives. The objective of this interdisciplinary project is to critically assess the role computer scientists can play in privacy by design in the age of cybersecurity. Based on this assessment, I plan to propose a novel methodology for privacy engineering that addresses the unique challenges that policy makers and computer scientists face in engaging in regulation by design.
