Numerical and analytical studies of applied gauge/gravity duality (FWOTM777)

The focus of string theory has traditionally been on trying to find a unified description of quantum mechanics and gravity. However, at the end of the 20th century an interesting relationship between certain string theories and certain quantum field theories of lower dimension was discovered. Observables that may be difficult to calculate using traditional techniques might be easier to calculate using the string theory description and this spurred an important research effort to try to model systems, traditionally described by quantum physics, by using string theory and gravity. My PhD research will focus on studying out-of-equilibrium processes in quantum field theories and applications to condensed matter systems using the dual string theory description.
