Microwave Microbiology (µ²Bio): Crossing Microwave Engineering with the Life Sciences

This project aims to develop microwave measurement techniques that are applicable in life science research, from the molecular level to the level of cell cultures. We will start from biological experiments, which we will approach both from a microwave measurement standpoint and from an electromagnetic (EM) standpoint. This integral approach offers the highest chance of gaining fundamental insight into which biological properties of biosystems can be measured using dielectric spectroscopy in the 10 MHz to 110 GHz spectrum. Given the many advantages, associated with this part of the EM spectrum as a probing modality into biosystems (label-free, non-contact, field penetration through cell membranes, etc.), the results of this project will be readily translated into commercial products, especially given the availability of mature IC and heterogeneous integration technologies.
