Energy storage as a disruptive technology in the energy system of the future

The electric power system is undergoing a major transformation, due to the transition to renewable resources and free market. Technology roadmaps and recent innovations indicate that energy storage technology will become cheap and abundantly available, leading to a disruption in the techno-economic operation and design of entire energy systems, since the fundamental instantaneous balance between electric energy generation and consumption, is no longer a fundamental condition for the system operation. The overall aim of this project is to address the implications of such massive deployment of storage technologies, both on the evolution of the system, its components and the control (technical), and how the economic setting (role of different market actors, business cases) will be i mpacted.
