Project

Early development and stimulation of core mathematical competencies

This C1 project aims to study the integrated development of 4-9-year-olds competencies in four early core mathematics-related domains, i.e., (1) mathematical patterns and structures, (2) computational estimation, (3) proportional and (4) probabilistic reasoning. These four core competencies are conceived of as a combination of ability in and disposition towards these different domains. We will longitudinally follow the development of these competencies in a cohort of 300 children from Grade 2 of Kindergarten until Grade 3 of elementary school, using a rich battery of measures and advanced data-analysis techniques. Additionally, four intervention studies are planned wherein comparable cohorts of children will receive an ambitious experimental program focusing on the early stimulation of one of the four above-mentioned competencies. Special attention will be  paid to individual differences in the development of these competencies.
