Lagrangian and calibrated submanifolds
Submanifold theory is an area of differential geometry which can be thought of as a generalization of the study of surfaces in the 3-dimensional space. Lagrangian and calibrated submanifolds are adapted to a special structure on the ambient space and they appear in different areas of mathematics, as well as in classical mechanics and modern theoretical physics, such as string theory, M-theory and F-theory. The aim of this project is to get a better understanding of the family of these fundamental submanifolds and of their properties, to construct new examples and to obtain classification results under important and relevant extra assumptions.
