The Certamen Hoeufftianum. Neo-Latin Poetry in Europe 1845-1978.

The archives of the Certamen Hoeufftianum, an international contest for Neo-Latin poetry which was organized by the Royal Academy of Sciences of the Netherlands every year from 1845 to 1978, have been rediscovered in recent years. These archives contain many hundreds of Latin poems as well as institutional documents. Using these materials, the researchers will re-evaluate the poetical Neo-Latin production of the 19th and 20th cent. They will also study the institutional documents so as to analyze how Neo-Latin poetry was dealt with during those 130 years. A junior researcher will study Latin poetry related to WW I and contextualize the ‘Hoeufft’ poems within the fields of Latin and vernacular poetry. A senior researcher will produce a full and critical inventory of the poems and documents that are to be found in the Hoeufft archives; on that groundwork he will base a critical history of the international contest.
