Project

A peripheral blood monocyte gene signature as biomarker for diagnosis of heptatocellular carcinoma (FWOAL857)

The goal of the study is to obtain a transcriptomic signature which is characteristic for peripheral blood monocytes of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients and which can be suitable for the prognosis and early diagnosis of HCC.
This study is part of a FWO-NAFOSTED bilateral research project between Flanders and Vietnam.
In view of the high prevalence of HCC in Vietnam, this project will use the network of the Institute of Biotechnology - Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology with various oncological centres in Hanoi to isolate peripheral blood monocytes from various cohorts of HCC patients at different stages of the disease as well as from healthy controls.
Next, genome-wide RNA sequencing will be performed at VUB to identify a set of genes characteristic of peripheral blood monocytes of HCC patients, which can be used as a diagnostic and prognostic aid.
