The Fragments of Diokles and Demetrios of Magnesia. Edition, Translation, and Commentary

The aim of my PhD is to prepare an edition of the fragments of the late Hellenistic biographers Diokles and Demetrios of Magnesia, in the framework of the research project “Die Fragmente der Griechischen Historiker Continued Part IV: Biography and Antiquarian Literature”, coordinated by Professor S. Schorn.

I will collect, edit in a critical edition, and translate into English all the extant fragments, which are transmitted in the form of quotations, paraphrases and allusions by Diogenes Laertios, Stephanos of Byzantion and other authors. The main part of the dissertation will be a philological and historical commentary on these texts according to the most recent standards of fragment research.

On the basis of this study, the fragmentary works will be reconstructed as far as possible. Furthermore, the position of the aforementioned authors within the literary context of late Hellenistic compilatory and “pinacographical” production will be assessed.
