Project

Access to justice of persons with mental disabilities (AJuPID).

The purpose of the project is to improve knowledge and foster awareness about Article 12 (3) of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Article 12(3) of the CRPD provides that States Parties shall take appropriate measures to provide access by persons with disabilities to the support they may require in exercising their legal capacity. The CRPD guarantees that persons with intellectual disabilities have legal capacity on an equal basis with others but there is still uncertainty about the ways in which supported decision-making can be achieved. The project is led by FUGAPEI (Fédération nationale des associations gestionnaires au service des personnes handicapées et fragiles) and includes other organisations of service providers as well as two European universities (KU Leuven and NUI Galway). It is financed by DG Justice of the European Commission and will start in March 2014 and take 24 months. The role of the Institute for Human Rights and Critical Studies (LIHRICS), KU Leuven, together with the Centre for Disability Law and Policy (CDLP), NUI Galway, is to undertake research on the legal protection of persons with intellectual disabilities.
