Project

Interplay between dynamics of the atomic structure and confinement of electrons and spins.

In this project, we will investigate the interplay between atomic vibrations on the one hand and electronic and magnetic properties on the other hand, specifically elucidating the role of confinement at the nanoscale. In three work packages, we will deal with: (i) the characteristics of phonon confinement when going from two-dimensional to zero-dimensional objects. Specifically, we will search for confinement-induced shifting and (dis)appearance of and changes in specific modes. We will also deal with (ii) coupling between phonons and electrons, in particular the influence of phonons on electrons in superconductivity; and (iii) coupling between phonons and spins in confined geometries.
