Molecular Spectroscopy (MolSpec)

Research Group

Main organisation:Department of Chemistry
Lifecycle:1 Oct 2003 →  31 Dec 2022
Organisation profile:The main research theme is the study of weak interactions in cryogenic solutions. As solvents mostly, but not exclusively, liquid rare gases such as neon, argon, krypton and xenon are being used. The solutions are investigated using vibrational spectroscopy. Much attention is given to the detection and characterisation of weak intermolecular associations, the so-called Van der Waals molecules. Closely connected with this are the investigation of blue-shifting hydrogen bonds and of simultaneous transitions in liquid nitrogen solutions. Further topics are the study of the rotation-vibration behaviour of small molecules in solution, and the study of Fermi and Darling-Dennison resonance interactions in higher-excited states. The experimental studies are supported by extensive Monte Carlo, Molecular Dynamics and Ab Initio calculations.
