The Experience of Lying: Informing the design of hospital architecture on patients' spatial experience in motion

Through her PhD research, in close collaboration with architecture firm osar architects, Margo Annemans initiated in the Research[x]Design group a new research line of high societal relevance and with exceptional potential for socio-economic valorisation. Margo’s PhD focussed on developing knowledge about the relationship between architecture and patients’ experience in healthcare settings. So far the resulting knowledge has been valorised in two ways: (i) osar applied it in the design of several healthcare buildings, including a winning competition design; (ii) in the Research[x]Design group, several bilateral contracts and new research projects have spun off from Margo’s PhD. In these projects, which are set up in collaboration with various architecture and other design firms, hospitals and other care organisations, and governmental agencies, Margo plays a leading, facilitating, or advisory role. Judging from the attention Margo’s PhD attracted from the professional press, and the interest from architecture firms and hospitals to set up new collaborative initiatives, substantial potential exists for extra valorisation in the future.
