The Stirring of the Religious Space. Late medieval perception and experience in the Antwerp Church of Our Lady (c. 1450-1566)

This dissertation is part of an interdisciplinary BRAIN-be project, a research collaboration of the KU Leuven, UCL and KIK-IRPA Brussels. The project aims at conducting an iconological and anthropological research devoted to the late medieval and early modern liturgical heritage (ornamenta sacra) from the Southern Netherlands. The historical framework of Wauters’ study spans the complex development of an urban parish where the limits of the social and physiological body are scanned. By means of a hypothetical reconstruction of Antwerp's Church of Our Lady (visual, auditory, olfactory and tactile), the user context of para-liturgical objects can be revealed.
