The Canonical Legislation of Interfaith Marriages (Canon 1086) in the Context of Religious Pluralism in North East India
The research is an attempt to analyze the canonical law on interfaith marriage (canon 1086) in the light of the India's Special Marriage Act, 1954. Interfaith marriages are a sociological fact and are increasingly common among people of different religions. It is a culturally sensitive issue in countries with a strong tradition of endogamous marriage. For example, it leads to major challenges in multi-religious India, where religious affiliation, in addition to the usual theological and pastoral issues, also has an impact on civil law. The investigation will examine how an integration of canonical legislation on interfaith marriage and the India's Special Marriage Act, 1954 can contribute to unity, social harmony and peaceful living of different religions in India.
