Project

From structural to functional characteristics of the lumbar multifidus

The general aim of this research project is to delineate the underlying mechanisms that contribute to chonic low back pain (CLBP), by extending our knowledge on structural characteristics of the lumbar multifidus muscle using ultrasound muscle imaging to estimate muscle volume and fatty infiltration, and by examining the association of structural features with functional performance, more precisely proprioceptive control. This could lead to the identification of more specific subgroups in the mixed population of patients with (C)LBP and development of individualized treatment strategies.
