The mental models theory and relational reasoning: Refinements, extensions and a developmental perspective

Relational reasoning plays a vital role in daily life. A critical review of the mental models theory shows that although the general pattern of data is in line with its predictions, some important problems can be identified. The present research proposal continues on the path set out by new developments with respect to the original mental models theory. The project breaks down into three major parts. The first consists of the elaboration of the role of working memory. The second consists of the elaboration of the model-construction strategies. The third consists of research investigating if reasoning can be improved through the use of training and gestures. Throughout all three parts, there will be a developmental psychological perspective and a use of a whole range of relational terms
