Chemometrics and metabolite profiles for the prospective study and quality control of plants of pharmaceutical interest: bringing this untapped approach into the field (FWOAL702)

Most of the currently available drugs are either natural, as phytomedicines, or were inspired in products obtained from natural sources. In fact, it is estimated that half of the drugs approved and released for use were based on natural products. For this reason, modern approaches that might enhance the success of studies for the discovery of new bioactive compounds, as well as new methods that improve the quality assurance of marketed herbal products are of great interest. In this sense, the use of chemometric tools associated with metabolite profile may be an alternative for the study in the phytomedicine field. Taking into account that the use of chemometrics is poorly developed in Brazilian research groups for the study of natural products, this project aims to apply this approach in two different steps of the area : bioprospection and quality control of herbal drugs. The issues addressed here come as a possibility for the search of new bioactive chemical entities, potential candidates for the development of new drugs, as well as the establishment of new perspectives for the quality assurance of phytomedicines. Developing new approaches for the study of medicinal plants is strategic for the country and is a topic on which skills and expertise from different areas of the health sciences must converge.
