The Relevance of Love in Julian of Norwich for Jean- Francois Lyotards Sublime: A Metaxological Analysis of Manageable Transcendence Beyond Idolization.

This proposal advances the symbiotic relationship among theology, philosophy, and mysticism today, proposing a renewed epistemological dynamic between the mysticaltheological conception of love and the philosophical aesthetics of the sublime. 14th century mystic Julian of Norwich’s hermeneutic of love and 20th century French philosopher Jean- Francois Lyotard’s sublime both attempt to overcome idolatries that rigidify transcendence or reduce particularity, pollinating a space between transcendence and immanence. In the theological milieu, the suffering Christ guides Julian between a hegemonic immanence and a hazardous transcendence. Lyotard revitalizes a conception of the sublime to catalyze the philosophical relations between immanence and transcendence, liberating the modern adherence to clear and distinct ideas.
