Book Contribution - Chapter

In many novels by M. Karagatsis, the protagonist has an aristocratic attitude towards life. The question, what exactly defines aristocratic behaviour, and how it correlates with the attitude towards money, is treated thoroughly by Karagatsis, as his characters are shown to change in their outlook on life, and, accordingly, in the way they understand aristocracy and the role of money. Whereas Junkermann in his youth behaves like the French aristocrats of the feodal period, to whom trade is vulgar, money is dirty and should be squandered, and debts are precisely that which distinguishes the born nobleman from the bourgeois, with the awakening of his sleeping humanity we see him evolve towards the Italian Renaissance model of AlbertiU+2019s Della Famiglia, which allows for money to be earned in trade, invested, or even saved, in order to be able to meet justified expenses. Andreas Echelpidis, in Amri a Mougkou, on the other hand, grows up in an impoverished aristocratic family, for which lack of money has turned into an obsession. Andreas rejects his familyU+2019s aristocratic tradition, but becomes a compulsive money hunter, thus giving a new content to the favourite occupation of the old leisure class. Finally, Erinoula, in To 10, who begins her life as a poor proletarian girl, keeps, even after acquiring considerable wealth, her good humour and the simplicity of her ways, which, together with her generosity towards the poor, are presented as the quintessential virtues in CastiglioneU+2019s Cortegiano, the Renaissance handbook of aristocratic behaviour.
