Oogheelkundige verwikkelingen bij patiƫnten met diabetes mellitus

Journal Contribution - Journal Article

Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of blindness among working people in the western world (aged 20 to 65). The duration of the diabetes mellitus is the most important risk factor for the development of diabetic retinopathy. There are different stages of the disease: the non-proliferative form, the proliferative form and macular edema. The last two stages are hard to handle and may lead to blindness. Prevention of diabetic retinopathy is therefore mandatory. Optimal metabolic control, blood pressure control, control of serum lipids and regular ophthalmologic screening are effective measures in the prevention of the disease. This can only be achieved by a good collaboration between the general practitioner, the endocrinologist, the ophthalmologist and the patient himself.
