Project

Archaeological exploration of the Bronze Age site of Sissi.

The project comprises an archaeological exploration of the Bronze Age site of Sissi, situated at ca; 5M from teh palatial site of Malia. The excavation provides a unique opportunity to examine social organisation within a secondary settlement in the hinterland of a palatial site. By studying social differentiation in the cemetery and the settlement social insights can be gained into social organisation at a local level. In addition, the deployment of material culture to emphasise social differences at a regional level (within wider region) will take place through a comparison with Malia. This will allow assessing whether or not there is empirical evidence to support the traditional model of the Minoan palace exerting political, economic and religious control over its hinterland.
