Project

Structure and dynamics of the provincial administration in the 15th and 16th Upper Egyptian nomes. A regional analysis based on necropoleis from the early Old Kingdom until the end of the First Intermediate Period.

This postdoctoral project aims to create a regional analysis of the early development of provincial administration in Middle Egypt at the end of the Third Millennium, by pursuing pattern recognition in the funerary remains. This is done on the basis of a number of largely contemporary necropoleis in two neighbouring nomes in Middle Egyptthe 15th and the 16th Upper Egyptian nomesthat encompass the entire Old Kingdom and First Intermediate Period. The research consists of three components: a textual, an archaeological, and an architectural one. In each of these three components patterns are searched for that give information about the population that was buried in the different necropoleis. These patterns that will be integrated with one another to create an image of the way in which the form, contents, andwhen availableinscriptions of a tomb reflect the organisation of the population.
