Segmentation, registration and visualization of the maxillofacial region based on cone-beam CT images

The use of cone-beam CT for maxillofacial rehabilitation, upon which orthodontics and orthognathic surgerical interventions, has recently increased significantly. Segmentation, registration and visualization of these three-dimensional images allow to support many of the diagnostic and therapeutical questions. Therefore we propose a statistical model-based approach, allowing to combine the obtained knowledge from the images withmodel-knowledge. Building this model-knowledge is enabled due to the use of a ground truth, obtained from an expert. In this doctorate both acquiring and combining the model-knowledge with the image information in amost efficient way are discussed.
