Project

Online CEF-based assessment of oral proficiency for intercultural professional communications.

The CEFcult project addresses the observed need in European enterprise for increased foreign language proficiency for intercultural professional communication. The outcomes of this project are built around the CEF - The Common European Framework for Languages from the Council of Europe. The current project will build on several realizations of its predecessor, the WebCEF project (2006-09), benefiting from the developed assessment environment and the overall project expertise gained by the partners. It will provide (future) employees and language trainers/teachers with a methodology on how to apply the CEF in a job context and in a context of intercultural collaboration. CEFcult will meet these needs by developing an online environment that brings together the worlds of higher education and enterprise for the assessment of oral proficiency for intercultural professional purposes, making optimal use of web 2.0 possibilities. The target groups are employees, those about to (re-)enter the workplace, language teachers, and in-company trainers. Principal outputs include: ·A modular, customizable web-environment that allows for self-, peer-, and expert- assessment, integrating CEF-scales with other rating scales for language and intercultural competence. ·A set of authentic communication tasks (scenarios) through which learners can assess their speaking skills for intercultural professional purposes in different European languages, some of which lesser-used. ·Training materials for self-, peer- and expert assessment in education and enterprises. ·Research-supported guidelines for foreign language teaching and educational policy based on observed international interrater differences. ·Viable and tested model(s) for collaborative assessment among higher education institutes, enterprises, and various partnership brokers.
