Project

Under the spell of learning: The learning society as challenge for the public role of school, university and family education.

Combining empirical methodologies with fundamental philosophical and theoretical work, the aim is to investigate how the current evolution towards learning environments is transforming tratdional educational institutions(school, university, family). More particularly we want to investigate how this evolution affects the kind of gathering or association that is staged and configured within these sites and especially how this affects their public character. On the basis of ethnographic research into concrete case-studies - professional learning communities at the level of parents, teachers and lecturers, as well as families and classrooms as learning environments - a cartography and morphology will be developed. This will allow to understand which kinds of gathering appear inside (or as reaction to) these learning environments/communities that are emerging today. Based on the mapping of the practices and the articulation of the form of the implied gatherings, the overall aim of this project, then, is to contribute to the development of an educational philosophy and theory (Bildungsphilosophie und theorie) for a learning society. This will involve the elaboration of an educational ecology that aims at articulating educational gathering as a specific form of public gathering.
