Project

Hellenistic biography: antiquarian literature, gossip or historiography? Collection of fragments with commentaries and syntheses within the framework of "Fragmente der Griechischen Historiker Continued".

This project aims at a reassessment of Hellenistic biography as a literary genre and as a historical source. For this purpose, it is necessary to collect the fragments of these texts, provide them with a commentary and, on this basis, reconstruct the literary personality of each author individually. Most promising for such an enterprise are the early Greek biographers Aristoxenus, Neanthes and Antigonus and some of the late Hellenistic authors which have used the works of their predecessors as sources and which have been used themselves by the authors who have transmitted the preserved fragments of Hellenistic biography. This project is part of the international project of "Fragmente der Griechischen Historiker Continued. Part IV: Biography and Antiquarian Literature", co-founded by Guido Schepens of the K.U.Leuven, and coordinated now by Stefan Schorn.
