Project

Functional analysis of fecal microbiota of Crohn's disease patients.

In this project, we will characterize the differences in the composition of the intestinal microbiota in Crohn's disease (CD) patients and their unaffected relatives, trying to validate previous findings in an independent cohort. At the same time, we will study the functional impact of this intestinal dysbiosis. We will make predictions about what attributes the imbalanced bacteria possess, and what contributions they possibly make to the microbial community and the host. This approach will lead to a further understanding of the role of the microbiota in CD and prepare the way to diagnostic and even therapeutic options. On the long-term, we aim to use these results in predictive models, trying to anticipate on disease course by correlating bacterial groups or species to specific disease-phenotypes.
