  • Research Expertise  (University of Antwerp):My research aims to investigate the influences of different weaning and rearing strategies on the development of the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) in the piglet. To this purpose, piglets are either artificially or conventionally reared, get euthanized, autopsy is performed, samples are taken of the GALT and histological and immunological investigations are performed. In addition, many collaborations have been set-up in which the vascular system in investigated by means of corrosion casts.

  • Research techniques  (University of Antwerp):-Vascular corrosion casts: the preparation of plastic replicas of any lumen containing structure such as blood vessels, lymph vessels. Corrosion casts can also be made from for example the avian air sacs or the gut. -Histology: the preparation of tissue slices to be examined with the light microscope. -Pathology: performing of an autopsy and sample collection of organs and tissues of interest that can subsequently be analyzed using light microscopy. -Anatomy: the preparation of anatomical specimens such as skeletons, corrosion casts and plastinates.
  • Users of research expertise  (University of Antwerp):-Vascular corrosion casts: anyone investigating some aspects of the vascular system. This includes both macroscopic and microscopic investigations using scanning electron microscopy. Examples of studies include investigations of angiogenesis, fine-tuning of perfusion protocols, decellularization protocols, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), three-dimensional organization of the vascular system. -Histology: anyone interested in the histological appearance of for example diseased organs. -Pathology: anyone working with (laboratory) animals who wants to perform autopsy, for example in order to evaluate the effect of a treatment. -Anatomy: anyone interested in anatomical specimens and preparations that for example can be used as reference material.
