Department

Lifecycle:1 Jan 1993 →  30 Sep 2018
Organisation profile:The Department provides groundbreaking research: annual research results are published in the most prominent international magazines. The Department is one of the departments of the Flemish Institute of Biotechnology (VIB) since its startup in 1996. The research is linked to two UGent's spearhead programs: immunology / inflammation and bioinformatics. The international appearance of the research also shows the acquisition of highly competitive European and US (NIH) funding channels. This research is being conducted from six research groups and includes biochemical, molecular-biological and systemological approaches to cell function. This leads to innovative insights into the principles of cellular communication, cell movement and cell organization with applications including inflammation and immunity, metabolism and cancer. In addition to this basic basic research, there is also a clear link to translational research. Original technologies are used in large scale studies: proteomics and interactomics programs offer new applications in the field of biomarkers and the development of new therapies. Among other things, via a comprehensive network of national and international collaborations, this is linked to (pre) clinical research.
