European Social Survey: Monitoring social and political change in Europe (ESS)

The European Social Survey (ESS) is a biennial, academically-driven social survey designed to chart and explain the attitudes, beliefs and behaviour of Europe’s populations. The ESS creates an international database about social and political attitudes, covering topics such as immigration, well-being and health, democracy, justice, and climate change. To date, almost a half million citizens in 40 countries have taken part in the ESS, leading to a unique cross-national time series spanning ten rounds. The complete database is freely available for the academic community, policy makers and interested citizens. The ESS database offers academics ample opportunities to interpret how Europe’s social, political and moral fabric is changing. The infrastructure provides indicators of national progress, based on citizens’ perceptions and judgements of key aspects of their societies that are of high relevance for policy makers and the wider public. The ESS contributes to improving the standards of rigour in cross-national research and the training of social researchers in quantitative analysis. This proposal purports the data collection in Flanders for two rounds of the ESS
