GEORIS – Innovative technologies for waste processing in ESEE Region (GEORIS)

GEORIS will transfer in the RIS region a novel geopolymerization technology that utilises industrial waste to produce construction materials and a catalytic powder, all exhibiting significant financial, performance and environmental advantages (~25-30% reduction in costs & CO2 emissions)

Extractive, raw materials processing, and metallurgical industrial activities in the EU generate a large volume of environmentally hazardous waste. This situation in East and South East Europe is exacerbated by improper waste management; a significant percentage of industrial waste ends in landfills. GEORIS will transfer to the RIS area an innovative geopolymerization technology that valorises industrial waste to produce materials for the construction industry (pavement blocks & fireresistant tiles/panels) and the catalytic converters market (a powder replacing PGMs), with lower production costs and superior technical specifications and environmental performance than existing solutions. To that end, 10 partners from 3 RIS countries (GR, Sl, RS), and 1 from a non-RIS country (BE) will:

  • Transfer the geopolymerization technology to RIS countries, and showcase its competitive advantages in applications on urban infrastructure (GR) and buildings (SI,RS).
  • Improve waste management and limit landfilling (~20 less tons of waste in landfills during the project, up to ~800 less tons per year by 2030).
  • Accelerate the commercialisation of the technology through a) engaging beneficiaries from across the value-chain (public authorities responsible for infrastructure, waste providers, construction companies, business enablers), b) matchmaking events and seminars to facilitate ecosystem development, and c) a meticulous commercialisation strategy and networking within and beyond the KIC.
