Exploitation: deep sea mining

The availability of critical metals plays a crucial role for the further development of several strategic sectors, including the renewable energy and electric mobility sectors. Since the deep sea and specifically the Clarion Clipperton Zone (CCZ) is rich in critical metals, interest in deep sea mining is therefore growing. Minerals from the deep sea are considered a common heritage of humanity (art. 136 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea). That is why it is important to develop a fair financial payment regime within the International Seabed Authority (ISA).
