Cybersecurity evaluation of the electric energy supply system

Electric energy supply systems are transitioning towards strongly interlinked, smarter systems that heavily rely on information and communication systems. Security is a critical requirement of these systems and not a day goes by without some company getting compromised, critical infrastructure controls systems getting infiltrated or personal information getting splattered all over the internet. Within this PhD, software vulnerabilities on devices within electric networks - for example PLCs, HMIs, SCADA and DCSs - will be investigated. The security of the electric energy supply system and its components will be evaluated. The security research will range from attacks on the data acquisition and sensing towards software and network attacks on the system components. A second line of work within the PhD will focus on designing novel security countermeasures to mitigate the identified security threats. The focus of this research activity will be mostly on system security and the application of cryptographic algorithms and protocols.
